Death Cab for Cutie證明了在主流唱片公司還是可以忠於自我. 三年前Plans的Soul Meets Body與I Will Follow You Into The Dark跨越了主流與獨立音樂的界線;一位青少女因為看了The OC而愛上主角的愛團Death Cab for Cutie;不斷有人問起Plans當中的某首歌;當你說出Death Cab for Cutie這名稱所獲得的回應不再是疑惑的皺眉,而是熱絡的贊同. 這之後Death Cab for Cutie會怎麼做?歌迷們都是既期待又怕受傷害,不過在新專輯Narrow Stairs的I Will Possess Your Heart這首歌出現後,我的確放下了心中的擔憂與疑慮. 8分36秒的單曲=不會有電台的撥歌或是音樂頻道疲勞轟炸的放送. 同樣的貝斯線條與鼓的節奏不斷重複,鋼琴不時的挑動心弦,聽者在享受這樣舒適平衡的重疊之餘也暗想著:vocal何時會出現? 終於在歌曲進行到四分多鐘,Ben Gibbard釋放了已經虎視眈眈許久的窺視者,用輕柔又理所當然的口吻(暗地的)說服著對方"How I wish you could see the potential,the potential of you and me... You gotta spend some time with me.And I know that you'll find love.I will possess your heart."這種stalker的行為看來有些變態,但人類都有的淺意識占有慾卻也可以像這首歌,單純又美麗. Narrow Stairs聽來是個較為明亮的專輯,沒有Plans那樣乾淨又整齊的錄音,Narrow Stairs可以感覺到一個樂團的能量在小細節或是小空隙中膨脹,最後充滿了整張專輯的是溫厚且牽動人心的旋律(當然還是保留了Death Cab式詩意的歌詞). 三年等待和沉澱的Narrow Stairs, 它絕對可以陪伴我再等待幾年後的下一張Death Cab.
